4.01 - The Freshman

4.02 - Living Conditions

4.03 - The Harsh Light of Day
Spike (and his new girlfriend, Harmony!) blows into town in search of the Gem of Amara, a relic which renders Spike essentially unkillable. Feeling especially low after being used and dumped by new guy Parker, Buffy gets both taunted and kicked around by the triumphant Spike, but she takes the ring from him and sends it to Angel.

4.04 - Fear, Itself
At a Halloween party, Gachnar the Fear Demon feeds on the gang's (and all the other guests') deepest fears in order to manifest on this plane, but his "big overture, little show" appearance is easily solved with a little foot-stomping.

4.05 - Beer Bad
Cursed beer causes Buffy's pretentious new drinking buddies to revert to cavemen. Also poisoned, Buffy gets in touch with her inner id (and Cave!Slayer) and manages to fit both "save Willow from fire" and "club Parker over the head" into her busy schedule.

4.06 - Wild At Heart
A female werewolf named Veruca wants Oz and to unleash his inner beast. When Willow finds them together, naked in his cage, her heart is broken. And when a transformed Oz tries to attack Willow after killing the wereVeruca for doing the same, he leaves Sunnydale to search for a way to conquer the wolf inside.

4.07 - The Initiative
Spike is captured by The Initiative, who plant chip in his brain that stops him from attacking humans. Riley, Buffy's Psych TA, seeks Willow's help in getting to know Buffy better, but considering they're both demon-fighters, they've got more in common than they know.

4.08 - Pangs
Buffy's plans for a Scooby Thanksgiving are interrupted by a vengeful Native American spirit, and it's hard to get the gang to concentrate on yams when they're arguing about whether to vanquish him or help him. Even harder to concentrate when Giles' flat starts to look like Custer's Last Stand and Angel wants to help Buffy without being seen.

4.09 - Something Blue
Still crushed by Oz's departure, Willow does a spell to have her will done so that she can stop hurting. Except that the spell backfires, making all her bitter accusations to come to pass. Suddenly, Giles can't see anything, Xander is a literal demon magnet, and Buffy and Spike are inexplicably engaged.

4.10 - Hush
The Gentlemen steal the town's voices and attack while their victims can't call for help. On their trail, Riley and Buffy discover each other's secret, and Willow has a surprisingly powerful rapport with new friend and fellow witch, Tara.

4.11 - Doomed
Buffy is wary about starting another office romance, but when Riley makes his feelings clear (and helps the Scoobies avert an apocalypse), Buffy decides to give things with him a chance. Despondent over his behaviour-modifying chip, Spike tries to stake himself but is thrilled to discover that he can still hurt demons.

4.12 - A New Man
Between the loss of his job and Buffy's involvement with The Initiative, Giles is feels old and useless. After a night of commiserating over a few pints with Ethan Rayne, Giles wakes up with a terrible hangover... and a slight case of being turned into a Fyarl demon.

4.13 - The I in Team
Now a de facto member of The Initiative, Buffy starts to ask too many questions, and Professor Walsh sends her into a trap to get rid of her. Buffy survives, but Maggie doesn't, skewered through the heart by her own demon/human hybrid creation.

4.14 - Goodbye Iowa
With Walsh apparently staked, Buffy is briefly under suspicion before Adam reveals himself. Unfortunately, without the drugs Maggie was secretly feeding Riley, Buffy's new boyfriend is in no condition to help.

4.15 - This Year's Girl
Faith wakes up from her coma looking to pay Buffy back for putting her there. She holds Joyce hostage until Buffy arrives, then uses a device left her by Mayor Wilkins to switch bodies with the other Slayer.

4.16 - Who Are You
Faith lives it up in Buffy's body, taking advantage of Riley and coming onto Spike, even insulting Tara, who realizes what's wrong. Faith mocks Buffy's 'good guy' attitude, but when she hears about a church full of hostages, she's compelled to intervene. Buffy finds her at the church and reverses the spell, and Faith makes a hasty exit from Sunnydale.

4.17 - Superstar
Jonathan does a spell to make him everyone's ideal. The world loves him, but the spell has an unintended side effect: namely, creating a raving demon. He knows that killing the demon will break the spell, but he helps Buffy do it anyway.

4.18 - Where the Wild Things Are
Buffy and Riley's active sex life awakens the angry spirits of abused children who used to live in Lowell House. The spirits use the oblivious couple as a battery to fuel their mayhem until Xander and Anya fight their way through the house to reach their friends.

4.20 - The Yoko Factor
In exchange for Adam's promise to remove his chip, Spike uses the cracks in the Scoobies' relationships to weaken the group by driving them apart.

4.21 - Primeval
Determined to stop Adam from creating his own race of demon/human hybrids (and realizing that Spike played them the day before), the Scoobies storm the Initiative to stop him. He's too powerful for Buffy to fight alone, however, so she, Willow, Giles, and Xander join forces through a spell that invokes the spirits of all the previous Slayers to allow Buffy to carry all their strengths into battle together.

4.22 - Restless
Offended at being invoked by the Scoobies, the First Slayer attacks them in their dreams, trying to strip away Buffy's friends. She insists that the Slayer must walk alone, but Buffy defies her. The First Slayer angrily departs, leaving them to ponder dreams that hint at big changes on the horizon.
