Spike & Dru

This sweeping romance began with a broken heart. In 1880, a young man named William was bluntly rejected by the object of his devotion. In tears, he sat in an alley, destroying a poem he had written for her, when Drusilla approached him. After years with Darla and Angelus, Drusilla wanted a playmate of her own, and this young man struck her fancy. Her off-kilter lilting made him uneasy, but when Dru spoke to the pain in his heart and praised him, William was fascinated. She sank her teeth into his throat, and and he was reborn as a vampire.

Wanting to leave behind the sensitive man he'd once been, William quickly shed his refined accent and insisted his new companions call him Spike. The foursome traveled together, hunting and killing their way across Europe. Then 1900 found them in China during the Boxer Rebellion. It was here that Spike killed his first Slayer. Dru seemed to see him in a new light after this, and the passion between them grew and flourished for almost a hundred years.

Around 1996, an angry mob in Prague attacked Drusilla, nearly killing her. Spike brought his ladylove to Sunnydale, hoping the Hellmouth might restore her to health. He succeeded but at great price. He was injured - confined to a wheelchair courtesy of Buffy. And then Angelus re-entered the picture. Angelus made himself instantly at home, seducing Drusilla away from Spike. She still loved Spike, it seemed, but her "daddy" came first now. He was the one who took her out to hunt in the evenings - not to mention, the one who took her to bed at night. When Spike finally got strong enough again to leave his wheelchair, he entered an unlikely alliance with the Slayer. He would help her stop Angelus' plans, and Spike would have Dru all to himself again. Everybody's a winner. Except that Drusilla was furious with Spike for hurting her Angel, not to mention aghast that he would go so "soft" as to ally himself with the Slayer.

They headed to South America, far from Sunnydale, but they couldn't seem to put the incident behind them. Spike found Dru cheating on him with a chaos demon. He was furious, but Dru told him that he was the one betraying her by carrying the Slayer in his heart. Spike insisted that Dru was being crazy - nothing new for Drusilla, after all - but the two went their separate ways. Spike's way took him back to Sunnydale. A drunken mess, he decided to force Willow to perform a love spell to make Dru love him again. However, the sight of Buffy and a newly-resouled Angel trying to deny their feelings for each other (plus a bracing spot of violence) was a revelation. He decided the way to win Dru back was to be the monster he used to be. If she thought his alliance with the Slayer had made him soft, then he would prove Dru wrong by torturing her until she loved him again.

Spike's plan worked for a time, but again, Dru strayed - this time with a fungus demon. Spike returned to Sunnydale in pursuit of the Gem of Amara, but he was captured by The Initiative and implanted with a chip that prevented him from harming humans. Once again, he found himself in an unlikely alliance with the Slayer. Despite Buffy's constant scorn and frequent abuse, he found himself falling in love with her. Drusilla, meanwhile, had gone to Los Angeles, but after a run-in with "Daddy", she sought out her old flame. She wanted to be with Spike again, but his feelings for the Slayer prevailed. Drusilla left town and hasn't been heard from since.
