Merrick Jamison-Smythe was Buffy's first Watcher. Played by Donald Sutherland in the 1992 movie (and by Richard Riehle in Becoming I), he found her to be every bit as infuriating as Giles first did, but in the end he sacrificed himself to save her life. And before he died, he gave Buffy a piece of advice that served her well throughout the entire series: "Do it wrong. Don't play our game."
